My kids are usually swamped with swim practice and weekend meets, but my elementary-aged daughter and son saw people fishing near the water and finally convinced me to take them. I have not held a fishing rod since I was about ten years old. We went to Academy and bought some starter setups, then headed out to a neighborhood pond in Creekside last night. Zero bites and total frustration! I would love some advice from locals on how to keep young kids engaged when starting out. What bait or gear setups actually work around here for beginners?

Parking around the main water spots on weekends is always a nightmare anyway. If you want elementary kids to stay engaged you need fast action or they start throwing rocks in the water. Ditch whatever plastic lures came in those starter kits from Academy. Pick up a tub of live earthworms or cut up cheap hot dogs. Put a tiny float on the line so they can watch it dip under. Small sunfish near the bank will bite every few minutes and keep them from complaining.

Bread balls fall off too fast in water. Use hot dogs or live worms instead. Small hooks near bank edges work great for young kids.

Honestly live worms are a disaster with elementary kids unless you want dirt and squirming worms spilled all over your car floor. We tried the worm tub once after a trip to Academy and my youngest knocked the open tub into the grass within three minutes. Hot dog bits cut into tiny squares stay on the hook much better and do not make a mess in your bag between school pick-up and soccer practice.

Three kids, one minivan, zero silence.

That worm tub spill sounds exactly like something my kids would manage to do! Quick follow-up question for anyone who knows - how far below the float should I set the small hook so it stays at the right depth for those little bank fish?

We used to take our kids out with simple poles and hot dog pieces back in the day lol. Setting the float about twelve to eighteen inches above the tiny hook is usually perfect for fish hanging out near the bank edge under overhanging grass. Just make sure to bring plenty of snacks and juice boxes because keeping their stomachs happy is half the battle when the bites slow down!
