Saw the news this morning while stretching at Northshore Park. The Township is preparing to pay millions to Houston under an updated regional participation agreement to block future annexation. Millions sounds like a huge chunk of cash, but it uses regional sales tax revenue to keep our current local structure and avoid getting absorbed by Houston. What do you all think, is this money well spent?

We went through these exact conversations back when the original agreement was put together. Paying a share of regional sales tax revenues to keep Houston from annexing us is the best bargain this community has ever had. If Houston took us over, our tax money would flow down I-45 and we would be waiting years just to get a pothole filled or a pathway cleared.

Old enough to remember when Research Forest was two lanes.

Spot on. People see millions in a headline and start worrying, but using regional sales tax to lock in protection against annexation is a no-brainer. I would much rather part with some sales tax dollars than have Houston city council dictating our local services and budget.

    Low and slow, y'all.

Thanks GrogansMillGal, that context makes a lot of sense. So this just extends the long-standing protection agreement we already had in place?

Yes, it keeps the exact same arrangement active. Protecting our local structure means the Township keeps complete control over our greenbelts and forest corridors. If Houston ever absorbed this area, we would lose all local say over how our forested buffers and wildlife habitats are managed.
