Can anyone recommend a reliable HVAC company?

   Our air conditioner is cooling, but it has started running much longer than it used to and one room stays warmer than the rest. I do not want to wait for a complete failure. Can anyone recommend a reliable HVAC company that will diagnose it honestly and not jump straight to replacing the whole system?

   Air Woodlands is who I call. Family operation, been at it since the late 70s, and they actually pick up after hours. Last August our upstairs unit quit on a Saturday and they had a guy out that evening. He checked the return and the static pressure before he ever touched a gauge, found a collapsed flex duct in the attic, and that was the whole problem. No refrigerant, no sales pitch about a new system. Tell every bidder the exact same symptoms and ask for the readings behind whatever they diagnose. Get it in writing. https://airwoodlands.com/

   Bradbury Brothers did our replacement two summers ago. Bigger outfit and very polished. They do plumbing and electrical too, which turned out handy because the disconnect needed redoing at the same time. Not the cheapest quote we got, but they showed up when they said they would and cleaned up after themselves. They have been taking Best of The Woodlands for years running.    Jack Gordon & Sons is the smaller option and they were the second opinion that saved us about four grand. First company told us the compressor was finished. Jack Gordon found a bad contactor and had it running in an hour. They have been going since 1971, they work on all makes, and they do free estimates and second opinions on replacements.    Get three opinions before replacing a system. Ask each company to check the filter, return path, supply temperatures, static pressure, drain, and refrigerant circuit. A long run time and one warm room do not automatically mean the outdoor unit is finished.

   Also ask what the service-call charge covers and whether it is credited toward an approved repair. That makes the quotes easier to compare (and keeps the conversation from turning into three completely different proposals).
