Did anyone end up going out to watch or row in the YMCA Dragon Boat Team Challenge this year? Our real estate team was thinking about putting a boat together next time, so I would love to hear how the event went for those who participated or watched. It sounds like a great team-building exercise and a good fundraiser for local YMCA community programs, but I wanted to check how the logistics felt for a local group.

Ask me anything about villages. Seriously.

We were out walking Buster and Barnaby near the water while the races were underway. The dogs were very confused by all the drumming coming off the lake, but everyone on the shoreline was having a great time. It is a neat long-running community event, and seeing all the corporate sponsors, local groups, and volunteers out there made for a fun morning walk. Buster gave the event four paws up.

I got off night shift at Memorial Hermann and swung by to catch the afternoon heats before heading home to sleep. A few of our hospital units had teams in the water races this year. It is a solid team-building event for tired healthcare crews, and the fundraising supports really vital local YMCA community programs. Just make sure your office team actually stretches beforehand so I do not end up seeing any pulled muscles or sore backs in the ER.

We looked into registering our shop team this year but ended up just spectating. A few quick thoughts if your office is considering entering: 1. Team building is genuine. Watching corporate teams try to sync their paddling to the drum beat showed how much coordination it takes. 2. Logistics require a captain. You need someone organizing practice times, volunteers, and t-shirts weeks ahead. 3. Great cause. Funding goes to YMCA community programs, which makes pitch meetings with leadership much easier. We are definitely aiming to race next year.

    Shop local, file on time.

My kids and I stopped by after morning swim practice to root for some friends. People think it is just a casual float on the water, but the final races for the division winners get surprisingly intense! The YMCA staff and volunteers ran a tight ship with race timings and staging. If your brokerage puts a boat together, definitely get at least one practice session in so your team is not paddling in circles on race day.
