- Low key ways to meet people around here for introverts in their 30s
I work night shifts at Memorial Hermann so my schedule is totally off from most social events. The best low-key connections I have made around here were through small volunteer shifts, like helping out at local charity events or nature center cleanups. People are working with their hands, so there is zero awkward small talk pressure.

- Anyone going to the Chevelle concert at the Pavilion on October 10th?
I am working the night shift that Thursday so I will just be hearing the bass echoing across the trees from the hospital garage while I start my rounds. Every fall we get a few people coming into the ER after these late outdoor shows with ruined hearing or sprained ankles from tumbling down the lawn hill in the dark. Wear sensible shoes if you are sitting on the grass.

- Battle of the Oaks game: Grand Oaks vs Oak Ridge
I was checking updates on my phone during my break on night shift. A couple of the doctors on the unit have kids at Oak Ridge and were keeping track of the score. When Grand Oaks jumped out so fast early on, everyone thought it was going to be a blowout, so seeing Oak Ridge claw back in the second half made the break room pretty intense.

- Eat This Fast & Fresh opening second location in Creekside
Coming off a night shift at Memorial Hermann, quick and fresh options are a lifesaver. Half the time I am too exhausted to cook, but fast food drive-thrus get old fast and leave you feeling terrible. If their concept really delivers on fast meal options that stay fresh, they will definitely get my business on post-shift mornings.

- Heading to the H-E-B Wine Walk at Market Street this year?
Just make sure you pace yourself and drink water between samples. Working the night shift in the ER at Memorial Hermann, we always see a few folks every year who forget how fast wine catches up to you in the heat while standing on concrete all evening. Wear comfortable shoes, hit the water stations regularly, and definitely use the garages rather than driving around looking for street spots.

- YMCA Dragon Boat Challenge experience for local teams
I got off night shift at Memorial Hermann and swung by to catch the afternoon heats before heading home to sleep. A few of our hospital units had teams in the water races this year. It is a solid team-building event for tired healthcare crews, and the fundraising supports really vital local YMCA community programs. Just make sure your office team actually stretches beforehand so I do not end up seeing any pulled muscles or sore backs in the ER.

- Pavilion Palooza Nov 7-8, anyone taking little kids?
The old Children's Festival is now Pavilion Palooza, presented by Texas Children's. Saturday Nov 7 10 to 5 and Sunday Nov 8 noon to 5 at the Pavilion. World Tour theme, Rock and Roll Playhouse concerts, train rides, touch-a-truck, carnival games, inflatables, an instrument petting zoo and science stuff. Tickets through the Pavilion's festival page. Mine are 3 and 6. Sat or Sun if we want to avoid the worst crowds?

- All-abilities pickleball at local parks?
Just waking up before my night shift and seeing this. From a physical health standpoint, community programs like this that focus on inclusive physical activity for every physical ability are fantastic. Just remember to ease into it, wear good supportive court shoes so you do not twist an ankle, and stay hydrated out there on the hardcourt.

- Cooking oil spill on I-45 main lanes today
I came off night shift at Memorial Hermann right as the backup started forming on the northbound lanes. Dispatch mentioned emergency crews were out there dealing with about 5,000 gallons of cooking oil spread across the main lanes near the Woodlands exit. You could almost smell it from the hospital parking lot. They had to spread tons of absorbent material to clear the slick, so it was total gridlock for hours.

- War of the Woods rain game on Friday
I came straight from my day sleep to meet my teenager at the game, sat in the bleachers dripping wet for three hours, and then went right into my night shift at Memorial Hermann. My boots were completely sloshing. We were braced in the ED for slip-and-fall injuries with how hard it poured, but thankfully it was just a lot of cold, wet high school kids heading home for hot showers after. TWHS earned that victory, that turf looked like a lake by the fourth quarter.

- Lone Star College lower tax rate and tax bills
Sitting down with my coffee at 3 p.m. after a wild night shift at Memorial Hermann, and reading tax rate threads is definitely one way to wake up. At least Lone Star College is lowering the rate while tackling their debt obligations. Between property taxes, health insurance premiums, and everything else, every little break helps, even if the savings end up being relatively small on the final bill.

- Anyone gone to the fall fundraiser before? Saw Will Forte is coming Nov 1st
If my night shift schedule at Memorial Hermann allows it, I might try to grab a ticket too. It is rare to get a good comedy night in town that also benefits local charitable efforts. Most people dress nice but comfortable, so do not stress about wearing anything super formal after a long workday.

- First impressions of the new Crunch Fitness (especially the kids club)?
She told me it is strictly drop-in on a first-come basis, but there is a time limit per visit. I think she said two hours max per day. She did say you have to check them in on their system at the front of the child care room every time, so make sure you set up your profile ahead of time so you are not stuck typing everything into the screen while your child is pulling on your arm.

- First impressions of the new Crunch Fitness (especially the kids club)?
I went in around 1:30 PM on Tuesday after waking up from my night shift at Memorial Hermann. That time of day is dead quiet, which is perfect for me. The weight floor was spotless and all the machines were open. My neighbor used the kids club yesterday evening around 5:30 PM while she did a class, and her main complaint was that it got pretty loud and crowded in there right after peak commute hour. If you go right after contract hours end for school, you might hit that rush.

- Tried out The Dumpling Zone on Metropark Drive
Night shift morning routine for me last week included stopping in after work. Those pork soup dumplings were pure comfort food after twelve hours on my feet. I saw the three dollar canned drink charge for my lemonade and made a mental note right then. Has anyone tried their fried rice variations besides the shrimp one?
