Now that school is back in full swing and car line is draining every ounce of energy I have, I am looking to get back into a regular workout routine. I noticed the new Crunch Fitness opened up recently and the pricing looks tempting. Has anyone here signed up yet? I would love to hear some honest first impressions of the facility, but specifically how their kids club child care is handled. My youngest still needs supervision during afternoon workouts and I am always nervous trying out new gym daycare setups.

I grabbed a guest pass last week to check it out between swim team drop-off and pickup. The floor equipment is brand new and they have plenty of racks, which is nice because the CISD natatorium weight area is always packed. I poked my head into the kids club to see the setup before bringing my youngest. It looks bright and clean, but the drop-in process had a bit of a line around 9:00 AM while parents were filling out paperwork. The staff working the desk were really sweet with the little ones though.

I went in around 1:30 PM on Tuesday after waking up from my night shift at Memorial Hermann. That time of day is dead quiet, which is perfect for me. The weight floor was spotless and all the machines were open. My neighbor used the kids club yesterday evening around 5:30 PM while she did a class, and her main complaint was that it got pretty loud and crowded in there right after peak commute hour. If you go right after contract hours end for school, you might hit that rush.

My wife and I signed up during their pre-sale. I mostly stick to the free weights while she does the group classes. For the price, it is hard to beat compared to what some of the boutique spots around Market Street charge. The downside is parking gets tight in the main lot between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. If you go then, save yourself the headache and park along the side lane right away.

    Low and slow, y'all.

Thanks for the heads up on the evening rush. NurseAtMemorial, did your neighbor mention if they require reservations for the kids club in advance, or is it strictly drop-in? With my teaching schedule, my arrival time can vary by twenty minutes depending on how chaotic traffic is getting out of the school parking lot.

She told me it is strictly drop-in on a first-come basis, but there is a time limit per visit. I think she said two hours max per day. She did say you have to check them in on their system at the front of the child care room every time, so make sure you set up your profile ahead of time so you are not stuck typing everything into the screen while your child is pulling on your arm.

I have had two families relocating from out of state ask me about gym options near that corridor this month. It is nice having another affordable option on that side of town so people do not feel forced into higher-tier club dues if they just want standard cardio and weights. One client who joined last week mentioned the kids club staff was very vigilant about checking parent IDs at pickup, which made her feel much better about leaving her four-year-old.

Ask me anything about villages. Seriously.

I stopped by that shopping center on my way back from the native plant nursery on Sawdust. The parking lot landscaping is still looking a bit sparse from construction, but my daughter has been using their child care three mornings a week for my grandson. She told me the staff actually engages with the kids and plays games with them instead of just putting on a movie, which was a pleasant surprise.

    Native plants or nothing.

It is funny watching new gyms pop up every few years. Back in the day we had very few choices around Grogan's Mill and you just ran the trails or used whatever basic setup was around. My daughter-in-law took my grandson to the Crunch child care area on Saturday morning. She said the room itself is smaller than the setup over at VillaSport, but for a fraction of the monthly cost, she had zero complaints about the supervision.

Old enough to remember when Research Forest was two lanes.

That is super reassuring to hear about the staff engaging with the kids and the strict ID check at pickup. Thank you everyone for the detailed feedback. I think I will pop in this Friday right after afternoon dismissal to set up my profile and do a walkthrough before committing.

Traffic getting out of TWHS lot by 4pm is already a nightmare so if you're planning Friday after school just know you might hit their after-work crowd too. I went last Saturday morning around 10 and the kids club had maybe three kids in there, staff was reading to one of them. Seemed like a calmer window if your schedule allows weekends.

I walked by the kids club room a few times when I volunteer at the elementary and one of the other volunteers mentioned her daughter signed up there. She said they keep the room pretty organized and do crafts with the kids, which her granddaughter loved. I'd probably avoid right after school gets out since everyone seems to hit the gym then. Maybe try a Saturday morning if that works better for you.
