Looking to take the kids out for pumpkins soon and would love to hear where everyone likes to go. My kids are still young, so I am mainly looking for a spot that has decent photo opportunities and fun activities like a corn maze or hayride, but without the insane crowds on Saturday morning. Where do you all take your families?

Three kids, one minivan, zero silence.

Hey friend! Fall season is officially here! For young kids, the absolute key strategy is beating the rush. Whatever spot you choose that offers a corn maze and hayride, show up right when they open on Saturday morning. The kids get to run off all that energy through the maze without bumping into fifty other strollers, and you get your family photos taken before everyone starts squinting into the sun!

    Hydrate. Then hydrate again.

Honestly, any patch that has hot cider and fresh kettle corn cooking gets my vote. We used to hit the local setups with hayrides and picture spots every year when my kids were smaller. My biggest advice is to try a Friday afternoon if your schedule allows for it. Saturday mornings anywhere around Montgomery County get packed fast once the word gets out. Plus if you wrap up on Friday, you can get the pumpkins set on the porch and get a brisket prepped for the weekend.

    Low and slow, y'all.

Years ago in Grogan's Mill, getting a pumpkin meant picking one off a wooden pallet in front of the grocery store or off a church lawn. Now an outing requires a full production with hayrides, corn mazes, and staged photo spots with rustic farm equipment. That said, the photo setups really are lovely for the memory books. Just keep in mind that the walking areas get dusty fast, so do not put the kids in their absolute finest clothes for photos until after they finish climbing on the hay bales.

Old enough to remember when Research Forest was two lanes.

If nice photos are your priority, look for spots that arrange straw bales, dried corn stalks, and a variety of heirloom squashes and striped gourds rather than just a flat field of orange pumpkins. It makes a much nicer backdrop. Bring a small blanket or bath towel to lay over the straw bales so the little ones do not complain about scratchy straw poking through their clothes. And as others noted, early morning light is far better for pictures before the Texas midday sun gets too bright.

    Native plants or nothing.
