We recently closed on a 3,100-square-foot home in the 77381 zip code and I am trying to figure out our utility setup before summer heat arrives. Coming from out of state, I expected to shop around for retail electric providers, but every search for our address points strictly to Entergy for electricity and CenterPoint for natural gas. A few specific questions for everyone: 1. Are Entergy and CenterPoint truly our only choices in 77381? 2. Is Entergy balanced level billing actually worth enrolling in for a house this size if we keep our thermostat around 75 degrees daily? 3. Is a $700 summer bill realistic if we do not use level billing?

Welcome to 77381. To address your first point: yes, Entergy Texas is the sole regulated electric utility serving our section of Montgomery County, including the villages within 77381. You cannot choose an alternate retail electric provider because we are outside the ERCOT deregulated market grid. CenterPoint handles natural gas distribution for our area in the exact same regulated manner. Regarding your question about level billing, it is certainly not a scam. The program calculates a rolling twelve-month average of your electrical usage so your monthly statement remains uniform rather than spiking drastically during July and August. If you choose not to enroll in level billing for a 3,100-square-foot home keeping the temperature at 75 degrees, a monthly bill approaching $600 to $700 during peak heat is entirely realistic. Kindly note that level billing adjusts periodically based on actual usage, so you still pay for every kilowatt-hour consumed over the course of the year.

Karen laid out the grid rules perfectly. You get Entergy for power and CenterPoint for gas, no shopping around like down in Harris County. On level billing, I run it on our house in Alden Bridge and would not do it any other way. My offset smoker stays out back, but inside I have two extra fridges and a deep freeze running in the hot garage on top of the home AC. Without level billing, your spring bill might be $150 and then August hits with a $650 surprise that ruins your monthly budget. Level billing smooths out those wild spikes so you pay roughly the same amount every month. Just remember that Entergy reconciles the account periodically, so if you blast the AC extra hard, there will be a minor true-up adjustment.

    Low and slow, y'all.

Thank you Karen and Brad for clarifying the grid setup. That explains why the shopping sites gave me zero results for our street. Brad, quick follow-up on the reconciliation you mentioned. Does Entergy hit you with one massive single-month bill during true-up, or do they just adjust your rolling monthly average going forward?

If your lot happens to back up to one of the greenbelts in 77381, mature oak and pine canopy helps block some afternoon sun, but it will not shield the roof from Texas heat. Level billing is really the most sensible option for managing monthly expenses here. We have used it for years. Just be mindful about lowering the thermostat below 75 degrees on 100-degree days, because your rolling average will gradually creep upward to reflect that extra load.

To answer your question about the true-up Sara, Entergy recalculates your rolling average throughout the year, so you do not get hit with one massive surprise bill in month twelve. They simply adjust your upcoming monthly payment amount slightly up or down to reflect actual usage. We have kids running in and out to swim all afternoon in July while the AC works overtime to stay at 75. Before we enrolled in balanced billing, August felt like paying a second mortgage payment just for air conditioning. Getting on level billing keeps your budget predictable through swim season. You can set it up right in their online portal.
