Conversation overview

A resident in Creekside Park is looking for a local woodworker or skilled hobbyist to help repurpose old hardwood drawer boxes into raised dog feeding stands with precise cuts and basic assembly. The consensus is that TaskRabbit is not a good fit for small custom craft projects like this, and neighbors recommend finding a local garage hobbyist, retired woodworker, or trim carpenter who enjoys small side projects.

Other options neighbors mentioned

  • Local garage hobbyists or retired woodworkers: many retirees in the villages have well-equipped air-conditioned garages and may do small projects for the enjoyment of the work (post #2)
  • Trim carpenters or furniture restoration hobbyists: people who do custom cutting boards or restoration on weekends may take on small jobs; someone with a table saw and router can complete this in about an hour (post #5)

Be cautious of

  • TaskRabbit: profiles are focused on full home renovations, drywall, and big carpentry jobs; workers are not interested in setting up for quick twenty-minute jobs or small craft projects and won't touch tiny custom jobs (post #2)

Community takeaways

  • Post on a village page or ask neighbors who have workshop setups
  • Supply the hardwood drawers and exact bowl measurements to make the job easier for whoever takes it on
  • Look for people who do custom cutting boards or furniture restoration on weekends

We were cleaning out our home in Creekside Park over the weekend and I saved a set of solid hardwood drawers from a piece of furniture we were getting rid of. My wife and I had the idea to repurpose a couple of the drawer boxes into raised dog feeding stands for our pups (it would look great with our setup and keep their bowls off the tile). The project is pretty simple on paper and only needs a few precise cuts and basic assembly to attach the legs and top trim, but I do not own a table saw or proper woodworking tools to do it cleanly. I checked TaskRabbit thinking I could find someone with a bench setup, but almost every profile on there is focused on full home renovation, drywall, or big carpentry jobs. Does anyone know a local woodworker or skilled hobbyist in the area who takes on minor custom craft projects like this?

I run into this kind of thing all the time at my restaurant on Market Street (we needed a small custom wooden display stand modified last year for our host station and faced the exact same wall). TaskRabbit is really geared toward guys looking for big handyman day rates or full room updates, so nobody wants to pull out their saws for a quick twenty-minute job. Your best bet for something small like drawer cutouts is finding a local garage hobbyist or cabinet maker who does small custom pieces on the side.

TaskRabbit is useless for craft stuff. I had a buddy try to get a custom wooden tackle tray notched out last year and got zero replies. Most of the guys working on full homes are not interested in setting up a jig for two cuts on old drawers.

The early kayaker gets the bass.

Thanks for confirming on TaskRabbit, I thought I was losing my mind looking through those profiles. It was all full kitchen trim and flooring crews (which makes sense for their time, but definitely overkill for two drawer boxes). I will ask around the neighborhood to see if anyone has a proper garage shop setup.

At my auto body shop over near Alden Bridge we get people stopping by with small custom metal brackets or trim pieces all the time, and the big commercial shops will not touch tiny custom jobs because of shop minimums. It is the same with woodworking. You might want to ask around with some of the local trim carpenters or retired guys who do custom cutting boards or furniture restoration on weekends. If you supply the hardwood drawers and exact bowl measurements, someone with a decent table saw and router can knock that out in an hour.

When I lived inside the Loop in Houston, you could not get anyone to look at a piece of wood for under three hundred dollars, even if you brought it to them. The nice thing about living out here is that half the retirees in the villages have ten thousand dollars worth of woodworking machinery sitting in their air-conditioned garages just waiting for a reason to run a saw. Throw a quick post on a village page or ask a neighbor who has a workshop set up. Someone with a miter saw and pocket hole jig will probably do it just for the fun of a quick project.

    Former Katy commuter. Recovered.
