Conversation overview

A neighbor sought recommendations for an anniversary steak dinner at a place that also offers lighter menu choices. Residents identified Charolais as a top tier option for its unique chef-raised beef, while Fielding's Local was highly recommended as a great compromise with a more varied menu.

Top recommendation: Charolais

  • Chef Austin Simmons raises the beef, a Charolais and Japanese wagyu crossbreed, on his own ranch.
  • Neighbors describe it as being in a 'different league' and fantastic for a high end evening.
  • The restaurant is located at 1900 Hughes Landing Blvd and is considered a great special occasion spot.
  • The happy hour is recommended as an easier way to try the restaurant without the high dinner prices.

Other options neighbors mentioned

Be cautious of

  • Fleming's Prime Steakhouse: A neighbor noted that it is expensive and will 'set you back a pretty penny'. (post #2)
  • Charolais: Neighbors say it is very expensive, running from $$$ to $$$$ for dinner. (post #6)

Community takeaways

  • For a high end anniversary dinner, neighbors suggest Charolais for its unique ranch raised wagyu crossbreed beef or Fleming's for its classic service.
  • Fielding's Local is a popular compromise, offering top tier 44 Ranch beef for steak lovers and lighter fare for others.
  • If price is a concern, the happy hour at Charolais is described as more affordable, and Johnny's Italian Steak House is a good budget friendly alternative.
  • Several restaurants offer weekly steak night specials, including The Goose's Acre on Tuesdays, Mahoney's on Thursdays, and Ronny G's.
  • Perry's Steakhouse is another classic option, but its giant pork chop is a very popular alternative to steak, especially the Friday lunch special.

Where are y’all going for a steak dinner these days? We are celebrating our wedding anniversary next week and want somewhere with fantastic steaks, but my husband isn't always in the mood for a heavy steakhouse menu. Would love to hear where folks are dining lately!

If it opened on Market Street, I've been.

If it is for an anniversary, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse near The Woodlands Mall is lovely. We went recently for a special occasion and the staff really went all out for us. You definitely cannot go wrong with their filet mignon.

Ex-Chicagoan. Yes, I know about the humidity.

Fleming's will set you back a pretty penny though. If you want a quality steak without paying prime mall prices, Johnny's Italian Steak House over on David Memorial Dr in Shenandoah inside the Crowne Plaza is a great budget pick. Their happy hour appetizers are well priced and good for sharing. Or if you just want a casual night out, Ronny G's has a $15.99 steak night, and The Goose's Acre does theirs on Tuesdays.

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

Fielding's Local in Creekside Park on Kuykendahl is our go-to when my husband wants a real steak and I want something lighter. Steaks there use 44 Ranch beef, but there is always a burger on the menu for whoever isn't feeling a full steak dinner.

Thank you all for the suggestions! Fielding's sounds like a great compromise for us. Has anyone tried Charolais by Chef Simmons down at Hughes Landing? I hear the prices can be up there, but is the happy hour worth checking out?

If it opened on Market Street, I've been.

Charolais is fantastic. Chef Austin Simmons actually runs the ranch where the beef comes from, and he created his own Charolais and Japanese wagyu cross breed. It definitely runs $$$ to $$$$, but their happy hour is much easier on the wallet if you want to try it out. If you want another classic spot on Woodlands Parkway, Perry's Steakhouse is always solid, though half the table usually ends up ordering their giant pork chop instead.

2004 transplant. Still call it Randalls.

Perry's Friday lunch pork chop special is hard to beat.

If you want another low-key option during the week, Mahoney's does a Thursday steak night that keeps things simple. But for a proper anniversary dinner, Charolais or Fleming's fits that special occasion vibe much better.

    Shop local, file on time.

Seconding Fielding's Local. That 44 Ranch beef is top tier, and the atmosphere isn't overly stuffy for a date night.

    Hydrate. Then hydrate again.

Johnny's in Shenandoah is solid for the price point, but Charolais at 1900 Hughes Landing Blvd is in a different league with that ranch-raised wagyu cross. Just depends on whether you want a casual deal or a high-end evening.

    Measure twice, call once.

We've gone to Perry's a few times now (the one on Woodlands Parkway) and it never disappoints for a nice anniversary meal. The atmosphere feels special without being too formal, and they really do take care of you for occasions like that. My wife usually gets the filet and I go for their New York strip, though I'll admit that pork chop is awfully tempting every time I see it come out of the kitchen.

I took my son to Fielding's last month after a swim meet at Rob Fleming and the ribeye was really good. They have lighter options too if your husband wants fish or chicken. It's casual enough you won't feel overdressed but nice enough for an anniversary.
