Anniversary dinner: fancy steakhouse vs bar hopping around Town Center?

My husband and I are celebrating our sixth wedding anniversary this weekend and we actually have a sitter for the evening. Since we have three young kids, getting a night out without them almost never happens. We are torn on what to do. Option one is splurging on a super nice steakhouse dinner with great cocktails and staying put. Option two is doing something a little more casual for dinner and hopping around a couple of different bars after. For those of you who rarely get kid-free nights, which route do you usually prefer?

Happy sixth anniversary. My wife and I have been through those busy years with young kids, so I completely understand how rare a quiet evening out can be. When our children were that small, our rule for date nights was simple: minimize transit and maximize relaxation. If you only get out once every few months, spending half your evening waiting for tables, walking between crowded bars, or trying to flag down bartenders gets tiring fast. We always preferred booking a nice steakhouse, taking our time over cocktails and a long meal, and letting someone wait on us hand and foot for two hours. Save the casual bar hopping for when the kids are a bit older and sleepovers are easier to organize.

Retired. My only deadline is tee time.

I am going to respectfully disagree with Sterling on this one. When you spend all week stuck in a routine with kids, sitting in one spot for three hours at a high-end dinner can feel almost too stiff. My wife and I always have more fun when we mix it up. Grab a bite somewhere casual first, then walk around the Waterway or Town Center for drinks. You get to move at your own pace, try a couple different spots, and the energy is just more relaxed. If you do go the bar route, just make sure you pick places close enough together so you are not spending your whole evening driving or looking for parking.

We just went through this exact debate for our anniversary last month. Honestly, with two kids at home, we went the high-end dinner route and did not regret it for a second. The biggest reason was energy level. By the time Friday night rolled around, the thought of walking to three different places and competing for seats at a busy bar sounded like work. Being able to sit in a quiet booth, order nice drinks, and actually hear each other talk without shouting over a crowd was worth every penny. If you rarely get away, treat yourselves to the full sit-down experience.

    It's always baseball season.

That point about energy level hit home, CreekwoodDad. Half the time by 8 p.m. we are already exhausted! Did you guys end up making reservations far in advance for dinner, or was it pretty easy to get a table?

From a pure logistics and budget perspective, a high-end steakhouse dinner with cocktails often ends up costing about the same as dinner plus drinks and appetizers across three different bars once you tally up separate tabs and tips. But more importantly, if you decide on a high-end restaurant on a weekend evening, definitely book a reservation ahead of time. Peak dinner hours on Friday and Saturday fill up fast, and the last thing you want on a rare night without kids is standing in a lobby waiting forty-five minutes for an unreserved table.

    Numbers don't lie, people round.

We go the nice dinner route every time (and we're talking maybe twice a year without the kids). My husband and I own a place in Market Street so we're around restaurants constantly, but on our rare nights off we always book somewhere with tablecloths and a wine list where we can just sit and talk for two hours without rushing. The bar hopping thing sounds fun in theory but when you're already exhausted from the week it turns into more logistics than relaxation. Make a reservation now though because weekend slots disappear fast.

We learned this the hard way a couple years ago when we tried to do the bar hopping thing for our anniversary (walked from one place to another around Town Center and then ended up at a third spot near the Waterway). By the time we got to the third place my feet hurt and we were both kind of tired from standing at crowded bars, plus the whole night felt rushed because we kept moving. Next time we just made a reservation somewhere nice, sat down for two full hours, and it was so much more relaxing. When you only get out once in a blue moon without the kids, I vote for the steakhouse where you can actually unwind.
