A neighbor asked for recommendations for a nice Italian restaurant to take their parents, seeking solid pasta and a good atmosphere while avoiding loud chains. The discussion yielded several upscale, locally run options, with Via Emilia being the most recommended for an impressive experience and Zanti Cucina Italiana as a strong, more accessible alternative.
Top recommendation: Via Emilia
- It offers an upscale Northern Italian dining experience.
- The restaurant is described as having a 'great room'.
- It is recommended as a place to 'properly impress your parents'.
- The limoncello cake is specifically mentioned as a must try dessert.
Other options neighbors mentioned
- Zanti Cucina Italiana: It is praised for its fantastic Neapolitan pizza and housemade pastas, and is considered easier to get a reservation at. (post #4)
- Papa Amadeos: This is a more casual option with a reasonably priced wine list where the chef makes everything in house. (post #2)
- Azzurro Italian Coastal Cuisine: Neighbors recommend it for coastal dishes and its location right on the lake at Hughes Landing. (post #4)
- North Italia: It offers seating that overlooks the Waterway and is considered a reliable choice for housemade pasta and wood fired pizzas. (post #6)
Be cautious of
- Nona's: This restaurant closed down in June. (post #4)

Not looking for a loud chain spot if I can help it. Where are you taking parents lately that has solid pasta and decent atmosphere?
This has been covered. Twice.
- Sep 30, 2026, 5:17 PM#2If you want to keep the bill reasonable without feeling cheap, check out Papa Amadeos on Sawdust Road behind Herb & Beet. Chef Arturo Huerta makes everything in-house, and their wine list is actually fair on pricing.
Cheaper taxes, longer drive.
- Sep 30, 2026, 5:32 PMAccepted answer#3Papa Amadeos is fine for a casual night, but if you want to properly impress your parents, take them to Via Emilia on Kuykendahl. It is upscale Northern Italian in a great room. Just make sure you save room for the limoncello cake.
If it opened on Market Street, I've been.
- Sep 30, 2026, 5:37 PM#4We have a few good directions depending on what style your folks prefer. Zanti Cucina Italiana out on Research Forest Drive is run by three brothers and does fantastic Neapolitan pizza and housemade pastas. If they like coastal dishes, Azzurro Italian Coastal Cuisine at Hughes Landing is run by the Orioli family and sits right on the lake. Just keep in mind Nona's closed down back in June, so do not try going there.
2004 transplant. Still call it Randalls.
- Sep 30, 2026, 5:45 PM#5Appreciate the quick replies. Is Via Emilia super tight on seating, or do we need to lock in a reservation pretty far ahead for a Saturday evening?

- Sep 30, 2026, 5:55 PM#6You definitely want a reservation for Via Emilia on a Saturday night. If you want another option with great views, North Italia on Lake Woodlands Drive has seating that overlooks the Waterway, and their housemade pasta and wood-fired pizzas are very reliable.
"Section 4.2 is pretty clear on this."
- Sep 30, 2026, 6:00 PM#7Just get the chicken parmigiana or gnocchi at Papa Amadeos and call it a day.
Retired. Walking the paths since the paths were dirt.
- Sep 30, 2026, 6:14 PM#8We moved here recently and took my parents to Azzurro at Hughes Landing last month. Sitting near the lake with their handmade pasta made for a really nice evening.
Ex-Chicagoan. Yes, I know about the humidity.
- Sep 30, 2026, 6:21 PM#9Lock in a reservation at Via Emilia today if you want peak dinner hours. Otherwise, Zanti is easier to deal with and handles family dinners well.
Shop local, file on time.
- Oct 8, 2026, 1:32 PM#10Saturday at Via Emilia you definitely want to book now. I took my parents there last spring and made a reservation four days out, still ended up at the bar waiting 20 minutes past our slot. The food was worth it but just be aware it fills up fast on weekends.
- Oct 12, 2026, 3:47 PM#11We did Via Emilia two weekends ago with my in-laws and booked four days ahead for a 7pm Saturday slot. Worked out fine but honestly it was tight in there. If your parents prefer a quieter setting Papa Amadeos is a better bet and the food is just as good.
