Planning my husband's 40th birthday dinner for next Friday evening. He loves good seafood, but I'm trying to decide where to make a reservation in the area. Looking for a nice spot where we can get great fish or crab without feeling rushed. Any local recommendations?

Truluck's on Hughes Landing is my top choice for a special occasion. Crab is definitely the main focus there and they do it right. If you go a bit early, their cocktail hour has half-priced cocktails and seafood appetizers at the bar.

If it opened on Market Street, I've been.

Truluck's is fine if you want to empty your wallet, but Nahui Seafood on Kuykendahl in Tomball is way more relaxed and much better value. It feels like a Mexican beach resort, and they bring out free housemade chips and fish ceviche as soon as you sit down. The rock shrimp and zarandeados shrimp are great.

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

Goode Co Fish Camp on Six Pines. Get the campechana.

Retired. Walking the paths since the paths were dirt.

Thanks everyone! Nahui sounds really fun for a casual night out, but since it's his big 40th, we might lean toward something a little more upscale. Is Goode Co Fish Camp dressy enough for a milestone birthday, or is it pretty laid back?

Goode Co Fish Camp at 8865 Six Pines is a nice middle ground. It's Levi Goode's Gulf Coast concept set in a casual but classy room, so you can dress up a bit without feeling stuffy. However, if you want a total high-end splurge experience for a 40th, Mastro's Ocean Club right down Six Pines is the see-and-be-seen spot. They serve Japanese Miyazaki A5 and Kobe beef alongside high-end seafood and a short sushi menu, though it is definitely a $$$$ night.

We took my in-laws to Tommy Bahama on Market Street last month for dinner. Sitting on the shaded patio overlooking the Market Street green was really pleasant. The coconut shrimp and crab bisque were delicious, and my husband liked the ahi tuna tacos.

Truluck's feels more like a birthday dinner to me. Fish Camp is a little more relaxed. I'd choose based on whether he wants to dress up or just eat well.

    This has been covered. Twice.

Nahui sounds like one to keep in mind for a casual lunch. For a 40th, I'd probably go with Truluck's too.

We did my husband's birthday at Fish Camp last year and honestly it hit the sweet spot, nice enough to feel special without being too formal. The seafood was really fresh and the service was solid. We dressed up a little bit but I saw people in everything from jeans to sport coats so you can go either way.

I work just down from Truluck's and a lot of birthday groups come through there, so it definitely feels like the right vibe for a milestone. The stone crab is pricey but I've never heard anyone at my tables say it wasn't worth it. Just make sure you book soon because weekends fill up fast.
