Other options neighbors mentioned

  • Mezze#1: Praised for incredible Middle Eastern food from an owner who came from Syria, though its location further north in Conroe was a consideration. (post #4)
  • The Olive Oil: Suggested for a classic sit down vibe and its mixed grill and gyros, and is expected to be quiet on a weeknight. (post #6)
  • Niko Niko's: Mentioned as a quick and simple option with a drive thru for solid Greek food. (post #2)
  • Zara's: Recommended as a late night option because it is open until midnight and serves a good gyro plate. (post #7)

Be cautious of

  • The Olive Oil: On weekend nights, the restaurant has belly dancers and live music, which gets pretty loud. (post #6)
  • Getting across the highway to Sawdust or Rayford at 5:30 PM can be very difficult due to traffic.

Community takeaways

  • For a nice sit down meal, consider the family owned Lama Mediterranean Cuisine in Shenandoah.
  • If you are willing to drive north to Conroe, Mezze#1 is praised for its incredible and authentic food.
  • The Olive Oil on Sawdust Road is a good choice for a quiet, classic meal on a weeknight.
  • For late night dining, Zara's on Rayford Road is open until midnight.
  • Niko Niko's offers a quick Greek food option with a drive thru.
  • Be mindful of heavy rush hour traffic around 5:30 PM when traveling to Sawdust or Rayford Road.

My in-laws are coming into town next Tuesday and specifically asked for Mediterranean. We need somewhere clean with good seating where we can actually hear each other talk. Where should we go for Mediterranean food around here?

This gets asked every few months. If you want quick and simple, Niko Niko's over on Lake Front Circle has a drive-thru and solid Greek food.

    This has been covered. Twice.

A drive-thru for visiting in-laws? Absolutely not. Take them to Lama Mediterranean Cuisine in Shenandoah. It is family-owned and halal, and their gyro, falafel, stuffed grape leaves, and baklava are wonderful for a nice sit-down meal.

If it opened on Market Street, I've been.

Lama is decent, but if you want incredible food without paying inflated prices, drive a few minutes north to Mezze#1 on Grand Central Parkway in Conroe. The owner Riad El Khalibi came from Syria by way of Moscow and Manhattan, and his Middle Eastern dishes are better than anything in town.

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

Thank you for the suggestions! Mezze#1 sounds very interesting, but is Grand Central Parkway an easy drive on a weeknight evening? Otherwise Lama in Shenandoah might be safer for my in-laws.

If you want a classic sit-down vibe closer to home, check out The Olive Oil on Sawdust Road. Their mixed grill and gyros are great. Just be aware that on weekend nights they bring out belly dancers and live music, which gets pretty loud. Since you are going on a Tuesday though, it should be much quieter and very relaxed.

Zara's on Rayford Road is open until midnight if your plans run late. Good gyro plate.

Retired. Walking the paths since the paths were dirt.

These are wonderful suggestions! As a newcomer to the area, I am making a note of all of these, especially Lama for the baklava.

Ex-Chicagoan. Yes, I know about the humidity.

Good luck getting across the highway to Sawdust or Rayford at 5:30 PM without losing your mind.

45 South at 6:10am. Every day. Pray for me.

I've been to Lama Mediterranean in Shenandoah a couple times with my roommates and it's definitely a comfortable spot where you can actually talk without yelling. The drive up there from College Park is pretty straightforward even on a weeknight and the seating is way more relaxed than some of the busier places in Market Street.

We usually go to Lama when we want a nice Mediterranean meal without the Market Street crowds. The owner is always very welcoming and the dining room has good spacing between tables, so it's easy to talk. I've taken my kids there before meeting up with friends and it's always been a pleasant experience.
