Be cautious of

  • Flushing an old water tank that has never been flushed can sometimes cause a new leak.

Community takeaways

  • Popping noises in a water heater can sometimes be caused by sediment buildup.
  • If a water heater is older than about eight years and has never been flushed, the popping is almost certainly sediment.
  • It is smart to have a plumber evaluate an old tank before flushing it for the first time.
  • A water heater problem may only require a simple part replacement rather than a whole new unit.

Water heater is making a popping noise and the hot water runs out after one shower. Sat in traffic on 45 for an hour yesterday thinking about it. Who do people use for plumbing around here? I want somebody who will actually tell me if it can be fixed instead of rolling in a new tank before they look.

We used Bradbury Brothers last year for our water heater. They're right here in The Woodlands. I was sure we needed a whole new unit, but the tech they sent out diagnosed it as a simple part failure and fixed it for way less than a replacement would have cost. Have you flushed the tank ever? Popping can sometimes just be sediment buildup!

I'd suggest Paul The Plumber. He's based up in Conroe but I see his trucks in The Woodlands all the time. He is a licensed Master Plumber, and he's known for being honest and actually explaining the work he is doing. My neighbor used him and was very happy. His website is https://www.paultheplumberllc.com/.

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

The popping is almost certainly sediment if the tank is older than about eight years and nobody has ever flushed it. That said, flushing an old tank that has never been flushed can sometimes cause a new leak, so it's smart to have a plumber look at it first. We called Paul The Plumber once and he was booked solid, so we ended up using Bears Plumbing Services from Spring. They were very responsive and did a great job on our gas line. Their number is (832) 287-5180.

Oh good point Andy, I didn't know that about old tanks! See, this is why I love this forum.

Update for the thread. I ended up calling Paul The Plumber based on the recommendation here. He was great. Just like you all said, he was honest and explained that it just needed a couple of parts replaced, not a whole new tank. Thanks for the help, everyone.

I had the same problem last summer at my place in College Park. Turned out the tank just needed to be flushed and the heating element replaced. My roommate actually called Bradbury Brothers after his dad recommended them, and they were straight up about what actually needed fixing instead of pushing for a new heater. Glad Paul worked out for you though, sounds like he did right by you.

I've used Bradbury Brothers twice now and they really are honest about whether you need a full replacement. The first time was for that same popping issue and they just drained the tank and replaced the anode rod, saved me a ton. Second time my daughter accidentally broke a faucet handle and they came out same day lol. Glad Paul worked out for you!
