My high schooler mentioned this event to me yesterday after seeing a flyer for it (she always catches these local things before I do), and I realized I have never actually been down to City Place for anything other than a quick lunch meeting. I saw the Water Lantern Festival is coming back to City Place in Spring for three days from November 20 to November 22. It looks like a fun family thing to do in the evening (and anything that gets my teenagers off their phones for two hours is a huge win in my book). Has anyone on here taken their family to it in previous years?

I took my kids last time it came through. Great setup. You get a kit with decorating supplies. Everyone sits on the lawn to decorate their lanterns. Then they release them on the plaza pond each evening. Kids really loved it. Good food trucks too.

We went a couple years ago. The event itself is nice, but parking around the City Place plaza pond gets packed fast right before the floating lanterns go in. If you do not park in the garage early, you will be walking four blocks with folding chairs. The November 20 to 22 timeframe should bring cool weather, but get there early or traffic on Energy Center Boulevard will be a total headache.

That is super helpful about the parking garage (especially with how busy traffic gets down near the Exxon campus area around dusk). Quick follow-up question for anyone who has bought entry tickets: does the ticket cover the actual lantern kit or do you have to purchase all the decorating markers and stuff separately once you walk into the plaza area?

My wife and I walked over to check out the setup last year while meeting friends for dinner nearby. To answer your question, the entry ticket covers the complete lantern kit along with your decorating supplies and full access to the festival area. They have live music playing on the plaza stage while everyone sits around decorating their lanterns before dusk, which makes for a very relaxed evening.

My wife actually booked us tickets for this a while back (she loves anything with outdoor lights and live music), so we took our little one down there last fall. We got there pretty early to grab dinner from the food trucks set up near the water. It was super easy to find a spot on the grass, and having the live music going in the background made the decorating process really fun (my four-year-old mostly just drew scribbles all over his lantern, but he was thrilled when it floated out onto the pond).

We went last year with some friends and had a great time lol. It is super peaceful once all the lanterns hit the plaza pond after sunset. We ended up staying way longer than planned just listening to the live music and grabbing extra dessert from the food trucks. Definitely worth taking the kids down to Spring for it.

It sounds like a nice evening, but if you plan to go, I would suggest keeping a few practical items in mind. First, check the wind forecast for whichever night you choose between November 20 and November 22, because a stiff breeze across the pond will push all the lanterns against one shore line very quickly. Second, if you have picky kids, I would bring a small box of your own permanent markers from home so you do not have to wait in line at the shared supply tables.
