Overview

Spring is an unincorporated community about 25 miles north of downtown Houston along I-45. There is no City of Spring, so residents are governed by Harris or Montgomery County. The name is used for a large area of north Harris County and south Montgomery County, but the original town, now Old Town Spring, sits at Spring-Cypress and Hardy roads and covers less than half a square mile.

Old Town Spring

The original town grew around the railroad in the late 1800s. After the rail roundhouse moved to Houston in 1923 the population fell, and older homes were later restored into shops. The Old Town Spring Association formed in 1980, and by 1989 the district had become a tourist destination known for festivals and markets.

ExxonMobil

ExxonMobil opened its 385-acre campus in the Springwoods Village development in 2014 and made it the company's global headquarters in 2022. The campus, just south of The Woodlands, brought thousands of jobs and a wave of new dining and retail.

Schools

Spring ISD covers much of the central and eastern area, Klein ISD serves the western side and several master-planned communities, and Conroe ISD serves the northernmost sections. Spring ISD enrolls about 33,000 students and Klein ISD more than 52,000.
