Conversation overview

A local resident asked for unique and reasonably priced Mexican restaurants to break from the usual Friday night routine. Neighbors suggested several options, with Julio's Mexican Grill and La Cocina de Roberto receiving multiple endorsements for their distinct food, value, and convenience.

Top recommendation: Julio's Mexican Grill

  • Serves delicious and unique dishes like El Sabroso, a breaded chicken breast with a shrimp and poblano cream sauce.
  • Neighbors say its street tacos and al pastor are solid.
  • It is a good casual spot.
  • The location is convenient for avoiding northbound I-45 traffic in the evening.

Other options neighbors mentioned

  • La Cocina de Roberto: Highlighted for being budget friendly, having great carne asada and camarón tacos, and for its BYOB policy where they provide margarita setups. (post #3)
  • Xalisko: Recommended for an elevated experience from a chef who trained in Hugo Ortega's kitchens, featuring tableside trompo tacos al pastor. (post #2)
  • Mexican Mom: Praised for its authentic, home style cooking from Chef Gina Antimo, with a weekly changing menu and popular enchiladas verdes. (post #4)
  • Belly of the Beast: A choice in Spring on FM 2920 for Mexican influenced dishes like house ceviche, Mexican hummus, and quesobirria tacos. (post #6)

Be cautious of

  • La Cocina de Roberto is a BYOB establishment and will provide margarita setups.

Getting tired of the same standard fajita plates every Friday night. Looking for Mexican places around The Woodlands that do things a little differently, ideally without ridiculous price markups. Any good local spots worth trying?

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

If you want something truly elevated, head to Xalisko on Lake Woodlands Drive. Chef Beatriz Martines trained in Hugo Ortega's kitchens and in Spain. You have to get the tableside trompo tacos al pastor. It is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality is unmatched.

If it opened on Market Street, I've been.

If Carl wants budget-friendly, Xalisko is going to hurt his wallet. Try La Cocina de Roberto off I-45. Great carne asada and camarón tacos, and their fajita and shrimp combo is a bargain. Plus it is BYOB and they bring you margarita setups.

Mexican Mom on Sawdust Road is fantastic if you want authentic home-style cooking. It is a tiny cafe run by Chef Gina Antimo. She changes up the menu every week, though the enchiladas verdes keep coming back because everyone asks for them.

    Shop local, file on time.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. La Cocina de Roberto being BYOB sounds pretty economical. Is Mexican Mom easy to get a table at during dinner hours, or is it strictly a small lunch spot?

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

It can get tight in there since it is a tiny space. If you do not mind driving down to FM 2920 in Spring, Belly of the Beast is another outstanding choice. Chef Thomas Bille does incredible Mexican-influenced dishes like house ceviche, Mexican hummus, and quesobirria tacos. Just a heads up that it gets very busy on weekends, so plan accordingly.

Driving down 2920 on a Friday evening sounds like pure traffic misery. I stick closer to Sawdust and hit Julio's Mexican Grill near PetCo.

45 South at 6:10am. Every day. Pray for me.

We went to Julio's recently! I had El Sabroso, which is breaded chicken breast topped with a shrimp and poblano cream sauce. It was delicious and very unique.

Ex-Chicagoan. Yes, I know about the humidity.

Julio's street tacos and al pastor are solid too. Good casual spot if you do not want to fight I-45 northbound traffic at 6 PM.

    This has been covered. Twice.

Mexican Mom is great for quick takeout on busy weeknights when kids have practice! Those enchiladas verdes save me at least once a month. But for a fun weekend dinner with friends, bringing our own tequila to La Cocina de Roberto is hard to beat.

My wife and I tried La Cocina de Roberto a few months back and really liked their camarón tacos, plus the BYOB setup made it super affordable. We ended up spending maybe half what we normally do at other spots since we just brought a bottle of wine and they did the rest with the margarita setup.

We tried Mexican Mom a few times and I think they close by 8 or 9 most evenings, so definitely more of a casual early dinner or lunch place. The space is really small so weekends can get crowded. If you want something different from the usual fajita routine on Fridays, their rotating menu means you might get mole one week or cochinita pibil the next depending on what Chef Gina is making.
