My kids have been seeing photos of the Water Lantern Festival online and keep asking if we can go this year. I know it is a ticketed event where they give you a lantern kit to decorate and light before releasing it onto the water around sunset, plus they have food trucks and music. My kids are seven and ten, so I am trying to figure out if it is worth getting tickets for the whole family or if it gets overly packed. If you have taken your family in the past, how was your experience?

We took our kids last year and had a really good time lol. Decorating the lanterns at the tables beforehand kept them busy for a good hour while we listened to the music and grabbed food from the trucks. The launch at sunset on the water is super pretty, especially for the little ones. Just make sure you arrive early enough to claim a spot and finish decorating before dusk gets too close.

If you go, plan your parking setup ahead of time. Town Center parking gets backed up fast whenever there is a ticketed festival by the water, especially right before sunset when everyone tries to show up at once. The event itself is fine and floating the lanterns is cool to watch, but walking half a mile from a garage because you got stuck in traffic is not fun with kids.

I went with a group of friends from Lone Star College last season. It really is an enjoyable event for all ages. Once you check in with your ticket, they hand you the paper lantern kit with markers so you can write or draw on the panels. The food options were decent and the background music made for a nice atmosphere while waiting for the sun to drop. The staff also clean all the floating lanterns out of the water after the event, which was reassuring to see.

Took my nieces last year. Kids loved decorating the kits. Music was solid. Sunset launch on the water was very scenic. Worth it for families.
