Has anyone taken their kids to the Family Promise fish fry in past years? I saw they are pairing it with the Toys for Cops drive on November 14th this year. Between swim practice schedules, I am trying to organize our evening and figure out if it is pretty casual for families. We would love to drop off some new unwrapped toys for the drive and grab dinner.

I hit the fish fry a couple years back. It is about as casual as it gets, which is right up my alley. Good folks raising money for local families experiencing homelessness across Montgomery County. The fish is usually fresh and hot, not sitting under a heat lamp all night. Definitely bring a few unwrapped toys for the drive if you go.

    Low and slow, y'all.

It is worth reminding residents that Family Promise of Montgomery County serves the broader county area outside our specific village covenants. They do wonderful work for families in transition across the entire county. If anyone is planning on hanging flyers for toy drives in the residential villages, kindly remember section 4.2 of the Covenants strictly prohibits unauthorized signs on township light poles or street corners.

"Section 4.2 is pretty clear on this."

Karen, nobody is putting signs on your light poles. Pam, we went two years ago and the kids loved it. Super easy layout, completely casual. My three spent twenty minutes arguing in Target over which board games to buy for the toy drive, so fair warning on that part if you take yours shopping beforehand.

Three kids, one minivan, zero silence.

Thanks Brad and WoodforestMom. That makes me feel much better about bringing mine straight from the pool. Do they usually take unwrapped toys for all ages, or is there a bigger need for younger kids versus teens?

Family Promise has been helping families experiencing homelessness around Montgomery County for a long time now. Back when my kids were in elementary school, our church group used to coordinate with them every fall. They usually need gifts for all age ranges, but people always forget about middle schoolers and teens, so board games, gift cards, or sports stuff always go fast.

Old enough to remember when Research Forest was two lanes.

My wife and I make a point to support Family Promise whenever they host these events. When you look at how fast the county has grown over the last twenty years, it is easy to forget there are working families right here in Montgomery County who hit a rough patch and need temporary housing and support. November 14th is already on our kitchen calendar. We usually buy a couple of basketballs and craft sets for the toy drive.

Retired. My only deadline is tee time.

Just to second what GrogansMillGal said, the organizers always express extra gratitude for gifts suitable for older kids and teenagers. As long as the toys are brand new and unwrapped, the officers and volunteers handle sorting them all out at the event. It is a very well organized evening.

    Native plants or nothing.

Love seeing this! I just sent a text to our youth soccer team parents to see if we can get a whole bin of unwrapped sports gear together before November 14. Great way to teach the kids about giving back to families right here in our county!

One quick practical tip for anyone heading over on the 14th, try to get in line early if you want the crispier pieces of fish. The line moves steady, but the peak dinner rush gets pretty busy once everyone gets off work.
