It is a process, not a formality, and it is not the same everywhere. Submit before you buy materials, keep a copy of what you sent, and do not let a contractor tell you he will handle it unless you see the paperwork. The fence is usually straightforward. The door color depends entirely on what is on the approved list for your section.

Also read your covenants before you buy anything for the exterior. People show up here every year annoyed about a letter they got, and nine times out of ten the answer was in the paperwork they never opened.
