Does anyone here have children playing basketball over at The John Cooper School this season? I was looking online earlier and came across a set of video highlights published on MaxPreps showing game footage and play highlights from their basketball program. The Dragons varsity team looks quite active on the court in those clips. I am curious if any parents or neighbors have been out to the campus off Woodlands Parkway to watch them play, and how the team is looking overall this year.

Hey there friend! I caught a few of those MaxPreps highlight videos myself after one of our youth practices wrapped up. The Dragons are playing with great pace and high energy this winter. The ball movement in those varsity game clips looks crisp, and you can tell the players have bought into the program. Always love seeing local student athletes executing solid fundamentals on the court!

Getting anywhere near Woodlands Parkway by the Cooper entrance right around game time is absolute torture. It took me 26 minutes just to crawl from Kuykendahl down past the light yesterday evening. If you are heading over to watch a varsity game, plan on sitting in bumper to bumper traffic before you even find a spot in the lot.

Private school basketball has some decent talent, but you are paying top dollar over there at Cooper just for tuition before you even buy a ticket. Up here in Conroe, you can catch fantastic varsity games for a fraction of the cost and get just as much excitement. But I will admit those video clips showed some pretty solid shooting from their guards.

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

Thank you for the input, CreeksideCoachT. It is good to hear that athletic fundamentals are being prioritized over there. ConroeCommuterCarl, as a point of order, private school athletic programs operate under entirely different operational funding structures than public school districts, so direct cost comparisons are not quite apples to apples. Did anyone happen to attend their last home game to see if parking management along the inner access drive was handled properly?

December 4, 2023. I stopped by the Cooper gymnasium to watch a double-header while running errands in the area. 1. The main gym seating was roughly seventy percent full by tip-off. 2. Parking inside the lot took four minutes to navigate, which is efficient compared to public high school venues. 3. The varsity roster has depth this season, especially in transition defense. Based on the game footage floating around online, their perimeter scoring is higher than last season.

I am absolutely obsessed with high school basketball season! A friend and I grabbed dinner near Town Center first and then popped over to check out the vibe at the Cooper gym. The student section energy was a solid 9/10, so fun and loud. The highlight reels online do not even do the atmosphere justice when the Dragons get a fast break going.

If it opened on Market Street, I've been.

Thank you for sharing those observations, HarpersHank and WaterwayWendy! Back in Chicago, high school basketball was a massive weekend event in our community, so I have been really looking forward to seeing how games are structured down here in Texas. I will definitely keep an eye on the schedule and try to take my family to a home game soon.

Ex-Chicagoan. Yes, I know about the humidity.
