I saw the news recently that The Woodlands Christian Academy had three high school students named National Merit Commended Scholars based on their PSAT scores. With my oldest getting closer to high school age (honestly I cannot believe how fast the time is flying), I am starting to look seriously at our options. For parents who currently have kids at TWCA, how has your experience been with the academic rigors and the college counseling program? We want to make sure the guidance team is really hands-on when it comes to high school planning.

The search bar at the top of the page works fine. Private school threads come up every single semester. That said, TWCA gets solid results on the PSAT and SAT because they focus heavily on test prep in the upper grades. My neighbor sent both of her kids there through graduation and said the small graduating class sizes mean the college counselors actually know the students by name instead of them just being a number.

    This has been covered. Twice.

I talk to a few parents while walking the pathways near Cochran's Crossing every morning. Two of my neighbors have teenagers over at TWCA and they always mention how approachable the high school teachers and college advisors are. They said the counselors really push the kids toward good fits for college rather than just a one-size-fits-all list. My labs Barnaby and Buster like greeting the kids on morning walks, though I know TWCA parents do the school drive over to campus. It sounds like a tight-knit environment if that is what you are looking for. Barnaby and Buster

Thank you Sam and CochransDogDad for the replies! Quick follow-up for anyone who has been through it (honestly the whole college prep timeline gives me anxiety), do the college counselors at TWCA start meeting with the students early in freshman year, or do they wait until junior year to start doing one-on-one planning?

My business partner's daughter graduated from TWCA two years ago and had a great outcome with college admissions. Here is how they handle the counseling track from what she experienced: 1. Freshman year starts with foundational profile building and standard course sequencing. 2. Sophomore year ramps up PSAT practice and early college search criteria. 3. Junior year begins mandatory one-on-one college counseling sessions with student and parents. The key question you need to ask yourself is whether paying private tuition for four years beats putting that money into a college fund while using CISD advanced programs like TWHS or College Park.

When TWCA first established its presence decades ago back before the Township incorporation had fully rounded out our village infrastructure, the local private options were much more limited. Over the past twenty years, the high school program there has expanded its academic footprint significantly alongside our growth in Alden Bridge and surrounding villages. The primary structural difference you will find between TWCA and our local public high schools comes down to class cohort size. At Conroe ISD high schools, a counselor might oversee hundreds of students across multiple grade levels. At TWCA, the total graduating class size is much smaller, which allows the college counseling office to track individual student PSAT and SAT milestones more closely. That focus is a big reason why you see students earning National Merit Commended Scholar status on the PSAT/NMSQT tests. It is a very structured environment.

Let us look at the financial math on this decision. You are already paying your full Conroe ISD property tax levy every year on your home assessment, which funds local public education regardless of whether your child attends TWHS, College Park, or a private school. If you choose TWCA for four years of high school, you are adding annual private tuition on top of your existing ISD and MUD tax obligations. When evaluating National Merit Commended Scholar outcomes or college admissions success, you have to weigh the total four-year out-of-pocket tuition against potential merit scholarship awards earned at graduation. For some families the lower student-to-counselor ratio justifies the double payment, but you should run your own numbers before committing to four years of high school tuition.
