Conversation overview

A resident received a dealer quote of $2,800 for brake work on a Tahoe and asked for trustworthy local mechanics for a second opinion. Neighbors recommended several shops, and the original poster confirmed Repair One was honest and saved them a significant amount of money.

Top recommendation: Repair One

  • Praised for being super honest.
  • Saved a customer a significant amount of money by advising only the rear brake pads needed replacement.
  • Voted Best Auto Care in a local magazine.
  • Showed the customer the old brake pads to confirm the repair was needed.
  • Verified by the original poster as charging a fraction of the dealer's quote.

Dealer quoted my wife $2,800 for brakes and "a few other items" on the Tahoe. In Conroe we would laugh at that number. But I am also not a mechanic, so who knows. Who does everybody trust for a second opinion out here?

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

We've had good luck with Repair One over on College Park. They were voted Best Auto Care in that magazine that comes in the mail. When my brakes were squeaking they were super honest, said the front was fine but the back needed pads. Saved me a ton.

Since it's a Tahoe, you might try Woodlands Car Care on Budde Rd. ASE certified, been around since the 90s, solid guys. They even work on RVs, so a Tahoe is nothing to them.

Been here since it was all pines.

For our business van we always use Christian Brothers Automotive on Panther Creek Pines. They are great about communication, and their repairs have a warranty which gives me peace of mind. Check them out at https://www.cbac.com/the-woodlands/. Ask for an itemized quote so you can see exactly where the dealer is getting that crazy number from.

    Shop local, file on time.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. We took it over to Repair One since they were close by. Just like you said, it was only the rear brakes. Out the door for a fraction of what the dealer wanted. They showed my wife the old pads too. Appreciate the help.

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

We've used Woodlands Car Care for years and they've always been straightforward with us. One time they told me I didn't need new rotors even though the dealership had quoted me for them, just pads. They'll usually give you a courtesy inspection too so you know what actually needs attention versus what can wait.
