• Halloween events and trunk-or-treats around The Woodlands this weekend

  We usually split the weekend between a public trick-or-treat event hosted by local organizations and walking our own neighborhood. My kids are 10 and 14, so they like the larger community celebrations near Town Center, but the local park activities are very well organized for families with younger children too. It is nice having so many family-friendly options across the area.

• Any casual pick-up soccer games for 11-year-old boys?

  My oldest is 14 and my youngest is 10, so we have been around various sports fields in Panther Creek and the surrounding areas over the years. In my experience, true pick-up soccer for that 11-year-old age bracket in The Woodlands or Magnolia is tough to find without a regular parent group chat behind it. Most open park fields get claimed by organized club practices during weekday evenings. If you do find an informal group, I would be curious to hear how they coordinate it.

• Good Mediterranean spot for a weekday family dinner?

  We usually go to Lama when we want a nice Mediterranean meal without the Market Street crowds. The owner is always very welcoming and the dining room has good spacing between tables, so it's easy to talk. I've taken my kids there before meeting up with friends and it's always been a pleasant experience.

  Junior League of The Woodlands Holiday Market is Nov 20-22 at the Waterway Marriott Convention Center. Fri and Sat 9 to 6, Sun 10 to 4. 100+ boutiques, decor, clothing, food, jewelry, toys, gifts. Proceeds go to local programs. Shopping passes through the Junior League. Which day is least insane?

• Honest mechanic? Dealer wants $2,800 for brakes

  We've used Woodlands Car Care for years and they've always been straightforward with us. One time they told me I didn't need new rotors even though the dealership had quoted me for them, just pads. They'll usually give you a courtesy inspection too so you know what actually needs attention versus what can wait.
