Saw the Township put out a notice looking for resident volunteers to apply for the Development Standards Committee. Since I spend half my life pulling permits or fixing work that homeowners got flagged for, I am actually considering tossing my hat in the ring. Anyone here served on the DSC or an RDRC in the past? Just wondering what the actual workload is like between reviewing property modification requests and handling covenant enforcement cases once the Board makes the appointments.

Having someone with actual trade experience on that committee would be a refreshing change. From what I know talking to people who have done it, the review packets are heavy. They handle both commercial and residential modifications across all the villages, so it is not just looking at fence heights. Make sure you hit the paperwork deadline if you apply because the Board moves quickly on appointments once the window closes.

    Shop local, file on time.

My late husband served on the Grogan's Mill RDRC back in the nineties. In those days we were mostly arguing over tree removal requests and shed placements, but the DSC is a different beast entirely. They handle covenant enforcement across the whole Township, commercial standards included. It is a substantial time commitment. You get a massive binder of plans and site requests before every meeting, and you are expected to have inspected the properties or read the specs cover to cover before you sit at the table.

Old enough to remember when Research Forest was two lanes.

If you do apply and get appointed Hector, please keep an eye on the greenbelt buffer easements in those property modification applications. So many requests try to creep past the building set-backs into the forest reserve lines or shave off native understory trees that the residential covenants are supposed to protect. We need committee members who actually enforce the vegetation standards.

Do not feed the deer. Please.

Thanks for the insight. GrogansMillGal, did he ever mention how many hours a week it took just to digest the packets? I deal with building drawings every day for work, but going through dozens of residential application files after a ten-hour day on site sounds like a full second job.

One of my swim team parents was on the committee a couple years ago and she said the meeting prep was basically like taking a college course every month! People get very intense when their pool plans or patio extensions get held up, so you have to know the exact standard guidelines backward and forward before the open meeting starts.

I had to sit in front of them two years back when I built my covered outdoor kitchen area with the smoker ventilation setup. Took me two submissions because of set-back clearance questions. Having a guy who actually understands structural drawings and property lines on the volunteer board would save a lot of regular homeowners from extra back-and-forth delay.

    Low and slow, y'all.
