Conversation overview

A neighbor's air conditioner was running too long and leaving one room warm, so they asked for recommendations for an honest HVAC company. Other residents suggested Air Woodlands as a top choice for diagnostics, along with a few other reputable companies and tips for getting accurate quotes.

Top recommendation: Air Woodlands

  • They are a family operation that has been in business since the late 70s.
  • Neighbors report that they pick up the phone after hours and can dispatch technicians on weekends.
  • Praised for honest diagnostics, such as finding a collapsed duct instead of pushing for a new system.
  • Technicians perform thorough checks on things like static pressure and the return before checking refrigerant.

Other options neighbors mentioned

  • Bradbury Brothers: A bigger, polished company that also offers plumbing and electrical services and has won local awards. (post #3)
  • Jack Gordon & Sons: This smaller option saved one neighbor money with a second opinion and offers free estimates for replacements. (post #4)

Be cautious of

  • One resident warned that their first quote from an unnamed company incorrectly diagnosed a finished compressor, while a second opinion found a much cheaper issue.

Community takeaways

  • Get three opinions before replacing an entire system.
  • Ask what a service call charge covers and whether it is credited toward an approved repair.
  • Tell every company the exact same symptoms and ask for the diagnostic readings in writing.
  • Compare quotes side by side, looking at the diagnostic fee, labor warranty, equipment warranty, and total installed price.
  • Ask companies to check the filter, return path, supply temperatures, static pressure, drain, and refrigerant circuit.
  • Confirm any advertised promotion or discount when you book the service call.

Our air conditioner is cooling, but it has started running much longer than it used to and one room stays warmer than the rest. I do not want to wait for a complete failure. Can anyone recommend a reliable HVAC company that will diagnose it honestly and not jump straight to replacing the whole system?

Do not feed the deer. Please.

Air Woodlands is who I call. Family operation, been at it since the late 70s, and they actually pick up after hours. Last August our upstairs unit quit on a Saturday and they had a guy out that evening. He checked the return and the static pressure before he ever touched a gauge, found a collapsed flex duct in the attic, and that was the whole problem. No refrigerant, no sales pitch about a new system. Tell every bidder the exact same symptoms and ask for the readings behind whatever they diagnose. Get it in writing. https://airwoodlands.com/

Licensed & insured. Get three bids.

Bradbury Brothers did our replacement two summers ago. Bigger outfit and very polished. They do plumbing and electrical too, which turned out handy because the disconnect needed redoing at the same time. Not the cheapest quote we got, but they showed up when they said they would and cleaned up after themselves. They have been taking Best of The Woodlands for years running. Whoever you go with, put the diagnostic fee, labor warranty, equipment warranty and total installed price side by side before you decide. https://bradburybrothers.com/

Jack Gordon & Sons is the smaller option and they were the second opinion that saved us about four grand. First company told us the compressor was finished. Jack Gordon found a bad contactor and had it running in an hour. They have been going since 1971, they work on all makes, and they do free estimates and second opinions on replacements. They usually have fifty off a first repair running. Confirm any promotion when you book it rather than assuming. https://www.jackgordonandsonsac.com/about-us/

2004 transplant. Still call it Randalls.

Get three opinions before replacing a system. Ask each company to check the filter, return path, supply temperatures, static pressure, drain, and refrigerant circuit. A long run time and one warm room do not automatically mean the outdoor unit is finished.

    This has been covered. Twice.

Also ask what the service-call charge covers and whether it is credited toward an approved repair. That makes the quotes easier to compare (and keeps the conversation from turning into three completely different proposals).

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

I second Air Woodlands. They did our annual service in March and actually showed me the delta on the thermocouples before and after cleaning the evaporator. One warm room usually means a damper stuck or a flex line crushed in the attic, not a compressor replacement. Have them pull the filter first and check your static pressure before anyone talks about a new system.

I've used Jack Gordon twice and they've been straight with me both times. A few years back they found a clogged condensate line that another company told me would need a new evaporator coil. They cleared it in twenty minutes. Long run times and one room staying warm could be a duct problem or a stuck damper like someone said above. Ask them to check static pressure and inspect the ducts in the attic before they quote anything major.
