Hello everyone. I am trying to plan out Thanksgiving break activities for my younger relatives who will be staying with us in Creekside Park during the holiday week, and I came across the Advanced Robotics with Scratch Thanksgiving camp. It sounds like a solid educational option that teaches coding and robotics fundamentals using the Scratch platform while school is out. Has anyone had kids participate in this specific camp or a similar holiday robotics program around here? Would love to hear if it kept them engaged during the break.

(We are already trying to figure out our Thanksgiving week schedule over in Creekside Park since the kids have the whole week off from school.) My eight-year-old took a basic Scratch coding workshop a while back and absolutely loved building little interactive games on the screen. Having an Advanced Robotics with Scratch camp right during Thanksgiving break sounds like a lifesaver for keeping their brains active instead of just staring at iPads all day while we prepare for Thanksgiving dinner. The drop-off traffic near the centers during holiday weeks can get a little messy around pick-up time, but having structured robotics fundamentals during that off-week is completely worth it.

As a high school math teacher, I can tell you Scratch is actually a fantastic foundation for young kids learning logic, loops, and robotics fundamentals before they hit middle school STEM courses. The main headache with these holiday break camps is usually parent parking right around the 4:00 p.m. pick-up window when everyone is trying to run holiday errands at the same time. If your kids already like building things, a structured Thanksgiving week program like this will keep them busy while school is closed.

Thank you for the quick responses! Spipscards, since you teach math, do you think the advanced robotics side of the Scratch program is easy enough for an eight or nine-year-old to follow without getting frustrated during a short holiday camp, or do they jump straight into complex logic?

My eight-year-old and eleven-year-old have both done coding sessions using Scratch. Scratch is visual block coding, so even the advanced robotics components are drag-and-drop logic rather than typing out lines of syntax. It keeps them from driving you crazy during Thanksgiving break when they have zero school work. Parking at any of the local activity spots during that week is always a nightmare because everyone is out, so just show up ten minutes early for pick-up.

(Back when my son was younger and I was spending sixteen hours a day getting the restaurant ready for the Thanksgiving rush, holiday camps were an absolute necessity for our family!) Scratch is wonderful because kids actually get to see their code control robotics actions right away, which keeps them locked in. Having a dedicated STEM activity during Thanksgiving week is such a huge help for working parents trying to balance holiday prep and kids being out of school.
