Community takeaways

  • If you have a piano or valuable antiques, consider a mover that specializes in moving them.
  • For a cluttered garage or home, you can hire a separate junk hauling company first to avoid paying movers to transport things you are throwing away.
  • Some moving companies offer combined services, handling both junk removal and the actual move.
  • Remember to ask potential movers about their valuation coverage options for antiques and other valuable items.

Downsizing into a patio home in Grogan's Mill. Twenty years of stuff. Have a piano. Have a garage I am not proud of. Need a mover. Search did not help this time, most of the old moving threads are companies that no longer exist.

Since you have a piano, I would call Firefighting's Finest Moving. They are local guys, actual firefighters, and they specialize in moving things like that and antiques. We used them and they were incredibly careful with our fragile items. Their site is https://firefightermovers.com/ if you want to get on their schedule.

    Measure twice, call once.

We used College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving when we moved last year. It was great because they handled both the junk removal and the move itself. The crew cleaned out all the stuff from our garage we didn't want to take, then packed and moved the rest. Two jobs with one company. The team was professional and in uniform, made it much easier.

    Hydrate. Then hydrate again.

For the garage you mentioned, I would get a separate junk hauling company out there first. No sense paying movers to move things you're going to throw away. We used a company called Gone Junk Removal and they were super fast and reliable. Cleared out our whole garage in about an hour. Their number is (346) 966-8600.

Thanks for the different suggestions, gives me a few calls to make. Did anyone who used these movers ask about valuation coverage for antiques? With 20 years in one house, I have a couple of pieces I am more worried about than the new stuff.

I had a piano moved by them too and they basically gave me a couple of options for coverage, either their standard liability or I could buy additional valuation that covered replacement cost. For antiques you definitely want to ask about the extra coverage because the standard is pretty minimal, like 60 cents per pound or something ridiculous like that. They explained it all before the move though so you can decide what makes sense.

I used Firefighting's Finest when I moved from Indian Springs two years back and they did ask about special items upfront. They took pictures of everything valuable before loading and had me sign off on it. Can't remember exactly what the coverage was but they walked me through it and it seemed fair for what I needed.
