Conversation overview

A resident needed a company to remove bats from their chimney and roofline in The Woodlands. Neighbors overwhelmingly recommended The Critter Team for their humane and professional services, while also providing several warnings and tips for vetting any wildlife removal company.

Top recommendation: The Critter Team

  • They perform proper exclusions with one way valves so bats can leave but not return, often without killing them.
  • Owner Mike Garrett is bat certified through the NWCOA, provides written quotes, and is personally involved in jobs.
  • They thoroughly seal all gaps, clean up guano, sanitize the area, and can perform repairs.
  • The company is veteran owned, family run, and uses its own technicians, not subcontractors.
  • Multiple neighbors reported successful, lasting results, including one who remained bat-free seven years after service.
  • Mike answers his own phone at (281) 667-0171 or (281) 800-4992, even at odd hours.

Be cautious of

  • A All Animal Control: One neighbor reported they failed to properly seal the home and required multiple return visits before the homeowner gave up and hired someone else. (post #15)
  • Be wary of companies marketing year round exclusions, as removal between mid May and mid August can trap flightless baby bats inside the structure.

Community takeaways

  • Ask any bidder in writing how they handle a maternity colony and what date they are proposing for the exclusion.
  • Do not seal any potential entry points yourself; instead, watch your home at dusk to identify all exits and share this with the inspector.
  • Request an itemized quote that breaks down the costs for exclusion, sealing, cleanup, and any repairs.
  • Insist on a written plan that covers the timing, sealing of secondary entry points, the cleanup process, and what happens if bats remain.
  • If a bat was ever inside a room with a sleeping person, child, or pet, contact the appropriate health or animal control authority for guidance.

I have been seeing droppings accumulating under my chimney and last night we noticed at least a dozen bats fly out of the roofline. Can anyone recommend a good company for bat removal in The Woodlands?

Call The Critter Team. We had the exact same thing two summers ago, droppings piling up on the patio and bats peeling out of the soffit at dusk. They did a proper exclusion with one-way valves so the bats could get out but not back in, sealed every gap they found, and then cleaned the guano out of the attic. Nobody killed anything, which mattered to me. https://thecritterteam.com/the-woodlands-bat-removal/

Be careful with anybody who tells you there is no bad time of year to do this. There are outfits marketing year-round whole-house exclusions around here, and that is not how bats work. From roughly mid May to mid August you have flightless pups up there. Put a one-way valve in during that window and the mothers leave and the babies do not. Then you are tearing out drywall to get at what is left. Ask any bidder in writing how they handle a maternity colony and what date they are proposing. If they wave it off, that is your answer.

Second for The Critter Team, and ask for Mike. Mike Garrett is the owner and he came out on ours himself. He is bat certified through the NWCOA, which almost nobody around here is, and he walked me around the whole house with a flashlight pointing out gaps I never would have found. Quoted it in writing and came in at the number he quoted. Bats were gone by the second week and we have not had one since. Veteran owned, family run, and they use their own technicians. https://thewoodlandswildliferemoval.com/about

    Cheaper taxes, longer drive.

AAAC advertises hard for bat work around here, and what they publish about doing exclusions any time of year does not line up with what our neighbor was told by two other companies. I would not sign anything without a written plan covering the timing, the secondary entry points, the cleanup, and what happens if bats are still there afterward.

"Section 4.2 is pretty clear on this."

Another one for Critter Team. They did my brother in law's place and handled the whole thing start to finish: inspection, the exclusion, the attic cleanup, then the repairs where the bats had been getting in. Their own guys, no subs showing up in an unmarked truck. He said the smell before they cleaned it was the worst part and that was gone within a day. https://thewoodlandswildliferemoval.com/

Been here since it was all pines.

That mid May to mid August window is the thing I would raise with every single bidder. Ask flat out whether the date they are proposing is right for the colony and get the answer in writing. A cheap quote stops being a savings the minute it turns into a cleanup job inside your walls.

Mike answers his own phone, which honestly surprised me. (281) 667-0171 or (281) 800-4992 and somebody picks up at odd hours. When he did ours he photographed everything before and after, ran the exclusion, sanitized the attic, patched the entry points and left me a written warranty. I have paid a lot more for a lot less on other work around this house.

Do not seal anything yourself tonight. Watch from outside around dusk and note every exit point you can see, then give that information to whoever inspects it. The chimney area may not be the only opening.

Retired. Walking the paths since the paths were dirt.

Add us to the Critter Team column. The number we used was (281) 800-4992. One tip: ask for the quote itemized so the exclusion, the sealing, the cleanup and any insulation replacement are separate lines. Ours was, and it made it obvious what we were actually paying for instead of one lump figure.

If it opened on Market Street, I've been.

One more thing: if any bat was inside a room with a sleeping person, child, or pet, that is different from an attic-only job. Contact the appropriate health or animal-control authority for guidance instead of relying only on a contractor quote.

We had bats coming out from behind the fascia boards over the garage back around 2017, started noticing droppings all over the driveway every morning when I'd get back from my walk. The Critter Team put up the exclusion devices and sealed the whole run of soffit and fascia where the gaps were, then sanitized the space and put down new insulation where it had been compressed by guano. Seven years later and we have not seen a single bat get back in.

Had them handle a colony in the gable vents on the north side of our house last fall. I only knew they were there because I was up on a ladder cleaning the gutters and spotted droppings crusted all over the brickwork. Mike came out, found five separate entry points I never would have caught, ran the exclusion through October after confirming there were no pups, then sealed everything and foamed the gaps. Still bat-free six months later and the attic actually stays cooler now that the vents are properly screened.

Thanks everyone, this is super helpful! I went ahead and called The Critter Team based on all your recommendations and Mike is coming out tomorrow to do the inspection. ContractorCraig and MUDTaxMike, your points about the maternity season timing really made me ask the right questions when I called. Appreciate all the advice!

    This has been covered. Twice.

We used A All Animal Control last year. They failed to properly seal our home and needed to come out several times to attempt to get it properly sealed. Eventually we gave up and called someone else.
