Has anyone ever had luck moving down a few rows to closer unsold seats during a concert at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion? I bought my tickets early during the presale, but I noticed there are still several open seats closer to the stage for an upcoming show. Frustratingly, those open seats are currently listed for the exact same price I paid for mine, but I cannot exchange them without paying a ticket exchange fee. Is venue security pretty strict about checking tickets if you try to slip into empty seats after the show starts? Also, has anyone ever successfully asked the box office day-of for a free seat upgrade if those seats stay unsold?

I work on Market Street right near the venue and hit a lot of shows on my nights off. Security at the Pavilion is pretty strict about checking tickets at the ramp entrances to the lower and main reserved sections. Ushers stand right at the top of each aisle, so you have to show your seat number every time you walk down. Before bothering to try anything, I would ask the venue staff these specific questions: 1. Is the ticket exchange fee strictly set by Ticketmaster/Live Nation or handled at the local window? 2. Are there official day-of upgrades available on the venue app once doors open? 3. Does the box office have authority to swap same-tier tickets if you show up early? In my experience, the box office will not give away free upgrades just because seats are sitting empty.

We went to a show there late last summer (after grabbing a quick bite near Market Street) and had a similar situation where the row directly in front of us stayed mostly empty the whole night. The ushers at the end of the aisle were checking digital passes continuously, even when people were just coming back from the restroom with drinks. Once the headliner comes on and the house lights go down, some people try to slide over into vacant spots, but the event staff walk the aisles with small flashlights checking row assignments if they see new faces move down. It is definitely annoying when presale pricing ends up being the exact same cost as closer rows released right before the event date.

Thanks for the heads up on the flashlight checks, that is good to know. Does the box office window ever waive that exchange fee if you walk up right when doors open, or is that fee enforced automatically through the ticketing system regardless?

As someone who worked in law enforcement for decades and helps with local logistics, venue staff maintain strict section control for crowd safety and to prevent seating disputes between ticket holders. If you approach the box office, I would suggest asking three practical questions: 1. Is the exchange fee a non-refundable third-party processing fee? 2. Do unsold reserved seats get re-released as discounted upgrades on the official ticketing app at showtime? 3. Will staff reseat guests only in the event of sightline obstructions? Box office staff generally do not waive fee structures established by ticket distributors.

I went down to the box office window before a show last season (took my son out for dinner nearby first and saw open seats online) to ask if they could move us up to closer unsold spots. The staff at the window were very polite, but they explained that any seat movement or upgrade has to go strictly through the official ticketing app, which automatically charges the standard exchange fee. When we went inside, the ushers at the section entrances were checking everyone's phone screens every single time we walked back down to our seats.

Yeah security at the Pavilion does not play around lol. I head over after finishing up work in Carlton Woods sometimes and even if the lower section has plenty of space, the ushers will ask to look at your ticket right on your phone screen before letting you step onto the aisle steps. I would not count on just sliding down into empty rows without getting asked to head back to your assigned seat.

I usually walk across the bridge from East Shore for concerts (it is so nice not dealing with garage parking afterwards) and I have seen people try to jump into empty rows once the main set starts. The staff walk up and down checking mobile passes if they spot empty rows suddenly filling up. If you really want those closer rows, paying the official exchange fee in advance on the ticketing app is pretty much the only guaranteed way to get down there without getting turned back by an usher.
