Unusual split sky shadow at sunset this evening

I was walking out to my car in the school parking lot after finishing up some classroom prep this evening right at sunset and noticed something incredible in the sky. One side was bright while the other side was completely shaded in a sharp, straight line across the horizon. It looked like the sky was split right down the middle. Did anyone else spot that tonight? I am really curious if anyone knows the atmospheric conditions behind how that shadow happens.

Grading papers and biting my tongue.

Saw it while I was out along the greenbelt trail near Alden Bridge watching for screech owls. What you saw is caused by cloud shadow projection, often from a massive cumulonimbus cloud sitting dozens of miles away to the west past Katy or Sugar Land, well below your local horizon. Even when our sky in The Woodlands is clear, that distant tall storm cloud blocks the sun rays from reaching one side of the upper atmosphere, while the unblocked light illuminates the rest. The clean division is simply the edge of that shadow cast across air molecules and humidity.

    Binoculars in the glovebox, always.

I saw that on my drive back from showing a home in Sterling Ridge! I was heading north on Kuykendahl when the horizon caught my eye. It looked so distinct I actually pulled into a parking lot to take a photo. Glad you asked because I was wondering what caused the straight shadow line.

Ask me anything about villages. Seriously.

Saw it while wrapping up a soffit repair on a house off Research Forest Drive. The homeowner came outside to check my work and pointed up at the sky. Thought my eyes were playing tricks on me after spending four hours staring at white trim paint in the sun.

Stepped out of the main entrance at Memorial Hermann to head home after my shift ended and half the sky looked like someone pulled down a dark window shade. Several of us stood right by the ambulance bay staring up at it.

    Night shift crew.

Saw it right as I was closing up the shop near Town Center. A few thoughts on it: 1. It looked like a giant wall of shadow moving across the sky. 2. The contrast was so sharp people walking by on the sidewalk were all stopping to take photos. Thanks for explaining the science Gary, saves me a trip down a late night Internet search.

    Shop local, file on time.
