Southbound I-45 hazmat spill backup through town

I was heading over toward the Mall for my shift this morning (usually I just take the back paths or local streets, but I had an errand down by 242 first) and noticed traffic on I-45 southbound was completely stacked up solid. Looked like KHOU reported a hazardous materials spill on the North Freeway going southbound through town, and response teams had multiple lanes shut down to deal with it. Did anybody here get trapped in that mess on their way down to Houston?

I saw the red line on Google Maps right as I was preparing to head down to an office meeting in Houston and noped right back into my home office. Traffic on southbound I-45 was backed up almost past Conroe. If multiple lanes were closed for a hazmat cleanup, you couldn't pay me to sit in that.

My wife tried taking I-45 south around 9:00 AM to head toward Spring and ended up sitting dead still for nearly forty minutes before she could crawl off at the next exit. Parking lot freeway at its finest. When a hazmat crew has to block multiple main lanes, the ripple effect onto Woodlands Parkway and Sawdust is instant.

I had to drive into Houston today for work (which I already hate doing with all the usual I-45 construction), and I made the mistake of hopping on the freeway right as the shutdown happened. I ended up sneaking through Grogan's Mill and taking the back roads all the way down toward Rayford (my GPS was scrambling just trying to find a route that wasn't blocked). Did anyone see how long it took them to clear the actual spill?

Hour_Consequence6248, did you manage to bypass most of it down by Rayford, or was that backed up too? I heard from a buddy working security near Town Center that cars were trying to cut through Grogan's Mill to dodge the North Freeway entirely.

I take the commuter shuttle into Houston most mornings, and we got stuck right in the middle of it. Total gridlock. The driver said it was a hazmat incident shutting down several lanes on southbound I-45 through The Woodlands, so we basically sat there watching people try to merge out of three blocked lanes into one.

KHOU updated their coverage earlier noting that response teams had to keep several southbound lanes shut down for quite a while to safely clear the materials from the roadway. My usual commute into Houston was delayed by over an hour because traffic bled heavily onto Research Forest Drive and Woodlands Parkway as everyone tried to detour around the North Freeway closure.

I work retail near the Mall and live up in College Park, so I usually take the feeder road or I-45 south for a couple exits. Luckily I left early for my shift, but the southbound feeder was just as clogged as the main lanes. It took about forty-five minutes just to go two miles because of everyone exiting off the freeway when the hazmat crew closed the lanes.

My husband had to run errands down toward Spring this morning and said it was a total parking lot lol. He saw emergency crews on the North Freeway blocking off the lanes while they dealt with the spill. Glad everyone stayed safe, but man, whenever I-45 southbound gets shut down like that through town, the whole area just freezes up.
